The weekend before
Halloween we made a last minute trip up to Morgan Hill in order to help out
Alana’s parents get their rental property ready to be rented again. While there
we decided to check out the HUGE pumpkin patch near her parents’ home, Uesugi Farms since we had not gotten around to getting
our pumpkins yet. It was packed full of people. There were rides, including a
train and carousel, a couple of corn mazes, pony rides, a petting zoo and
hayrides. Unfortunately, due to time constraints we weren’t able to check any
of them out. The lines were long and we needed to get on the road so after a
quick walk around we picked out some pumpkins and left. Poor Tyler was so
disappointed that he didn’t even get to ride the train. If we go in the future
we’ll plan to get there early and set more than just a couple of hours aside to
take it all in.

For Halloween this year we held a potluck at
the house. Then afterwards we all took the kids out trick-or-treating around
the neighborhood. This year Tyler wanted to be Wall-E. Instead of buying the
ready made, $50 licensed costume we decided to make a costume for him. Well,
true to Bill’s nature, it turned out to be a bigger project than we thought and
also cost us more than $50 to make it. I think this was the first and last time
that we’ll be making a Halloween costume. It did turn out well though and it
was a big hit with everyone. We would be walking down the street and kids
across the street would yell out “Hey! Wall-E!” The only thing we didn’t think
about was how wide the costume was. No one else could really share the sidewalk
with Tyler and navigating through the hordes of kids trick-or-treating proved
to be interesting. Tyler was a trooper though. Amazingly the costume managed to
stay intact except for 1 little piece of Wall-E’s track. What really mattered
is that Tyler loved his costume and was very excited about wearing it. When we
took it apart to store it was very disappointed. Hopefully next year he’ll want
to be something less complicated, like a Transformer. Or not.
Oh, and for the record, do not stand in the middle of a room full
of kids and ask out loud if they’re ready to go trick-or-treating unless you
are really ready to go. They will exit the premises in 5 seconds flat,
with or without their parents and their costumes.
